Our History
It started with a simple realisation. That business owners deserved better.
In 2013, Beany co-founder Sue de Bievre was working in a local accounting firm and saw an industry that had barely changed in decades. Around her were rooms full of paper and clients paying thousands for annual accounts they didn’t understand.
Cloud-based software was bringing accounting into the digital age, but the fees and way firms worked weren’t shifting. In fact, most things were being done the same way as when she first became an accountant in the late 80s.
Partnering with John Curtis, fresh off 12 years at Weta Digital, they set out to build something different. An online model where technology helped make processes more efficient, so fees could come down without cutting corners on service. Six months later, they had the first iteration of Beany. They invited 20 businesses to try and break it and 17 of them became Beany’s first clients.
From day one, Beany was built around the simple idea of pairing technology with real human support. That idea hasn't changed, even as Beany has grown and the services have evolved.
Today, we support thousands of business owners across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom with local experts in each country.
"My own experience as a small business owner shaped Beany from the beginning.
I knew the pressure of not being able to pay bills and the relief when things finally turned around.
I didn't just understand small business, I felt it.
I wanted to move the profession forward and create something that genuinely helped people."
