BAS FAQS

Frequently asked questions

A BAS is a report that businesses must lodge with the ATO that summarises several tax obligations, including GST, PAYG withholding tax (if you have employees), PAYG instalments (if you’re paying tax on business income throughout the year), and other taxes like FBT instalments or luxury car tax (if applicable).Depending on your business, this is monthly, quarterly or annually.Based on the details lodged in the BAS return, businesses either make a payment to the ATO or receive a refund.
If you carry out any form of business activity with a turnover of $75,000+ annually, you must be GST-registered and lodge a BAS.Essentially, once you’re registered for GST, you’re required to lodge a BAS.
This depends on your filing frequency and whether you have an accountant or not. If you file quarterly with an accountant, the due dates are 25th November, 28th February, 26th May and 25th August.
The short answer, yes. You can lodge via your ATO portal or some accounting software. However, tax rules can be complex, which is why many business owners choose to work with a professional.A BAS is not just about reporting the GST on sales and purchases, but also includes other tax obligations (where applicable). There may also be GST-free or GST-exempt transactions to consider, along with manual credit or debit adjustments (for example, where an asset is partly used for private purposes).A tax professional looks at all of this, makes the necessary corrections and adjustments, and ensures your BAS is accurate and complete before it's lodged with the ATO.
