Small Changes to Make a Big Difference

You want this year to be better than last, right? Of course, we all do.

And the easiest way to do it is make some small changes – changes which could and up making a big difference.

Now’s the time to get started, so here are a few suggestions:

Set up a Holiday Savings account

We all love a great holiday, and a bit of extra spending money can make all the difference. Open a holiday bank account, one with no bank fees. Set up a weekly automatic payment of $20 per week (or even $10).

Do it now. Then forget about it.

By next Christmas, you’ll have your spending money sorted.

Increase your KiwiSaver %

You can choose 3%, 4% or 8% of your pay and you’re allowed to change it every 3 months if you want.  If you’re an employee, just put it in writing to your employer.  

If you’re self-employed then contact your Kiwisaver provider and change the amount.

If you shift your rate from 3% to 4% as an 18 year old today then your retirement income shifts from $399 per week to $472 per week.  Your 65 year old self will thank you.

Extra tip:  Check to see if you have the right Kiwisaver provider!  Lower fees can make a big difference over your working life. Here’s a good link to providers so you can compare what they offer.

Walk the Stairs

Don’t take the lift.  OK, not everyone has a lift but you know what I mean.  Make a bit of time to sneak some extra exercise into your routine.  Do 10 minutes more every day than you did last year.  

Power walk to the sandwich bar, get into your garden, race about with your kids, be smart about getting fitter. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel at work.

Laugh More

If you’re having one of those days and your stress levels are rising, walk away for a minute or two. Have a chat and a laugh with a friend or colleague. Hop on youtube and look at some funny clips.  

Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, keeping you healthy. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.

Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

And a bit of a chuckle always helps put things in perspective. Now, back to work and let’s get these problems sorted!

Earn More

Because you can, you know, you really can. If you’re an employee, then make a 5 point list about your value to your employer.  Then make a time to see your boss, go through the list and ask for a rise. If you don’t ask, you won’t get!

If you own your business, consider these ways to increase your income.  If you charge by the hour, think how can you release 30 minutes into productive time?  If you want to sell more, ask your existing customers for referrals. If you want to make a better margin, ask your key suppliers for a loyalty discount or check around for better deals; they’re out there somewhere.

Then you can take your extra income and increase that AP to your holiday account!
